An AMD spokesperson told CRN on Friday that Taylor “has decided to leave AMD to pursue other opportunities” and that while the company is “exploring potential candidates” for his replacement, it will “continue to deliver value to our North American customers and partners across the channel ecosystem.”
The representative added, “While we are saddened by Mark’s departure, our commitment to the channel has only grown stronger and our entire team is focused on maintaining business continuity for our programs and partners.”
“Our channel partner program is stronger than ever, and we will continue to deliver value to our North American customers and partners across the channel ecosystem,” an AMD spokesperson said.
Taylor (pictured above) now lists himself as vice president and general manager at TBX Services, a division of St. Louis, Missouri-based World Wide Technology, which ranks No. 7 on CRN’s list. 2024 Solutions Provider 500 List,
CRN recognized Taylor, the former head of Arrow Electronics, as one of this year’s best. Most Influential Channel HeadIt’s a reflection of the chip designer’s increased presence in the channel as the company bets its next phase of growth on the promise of AI to compete with Intel, Nvidia and others in the PC, data center, cloud and edge markets.
As of February, AMD had 675 channel partners worldwide, 135 of which were under Taylor’s purview in North America. His profile on CRN’s 2024 Channel Chiefs feature.
During his tenure at AMD, Taylor oversaw the relaunch of the company’s cloud partner program last year, which complements existing partner programs in the data center and PC markets, according to his CRN profile. Most recently, he was shaping AMD’s programs to prepare partners for new AI-related products in the PC, data center and cloud markets.
In the profile, Taylor said his organization has also increased the number of business development resources working closely with partners, increased the number of server and PC demo units available to partners, increased funding to help partners build demand for products and created a team of dedicated technical resources for partners.
According to Taylor’s profile, AMD plans to grow its partner roster this year and budget for a market development fund. Their top channel goals for 2024 were to grow revenue coming through channel partners, increase the number of brand new accounts coming through partners, and improve the technical skills of partners.
Taylor’s predecessor, Richardson, was a longtime Hewlett Packard Enterprise channel and sales executive. He was appointed in 2008 as AMD’s first North America channel head. March 2021 to develop New Commercial Partner Program and bend over His many relationships In the channel to build brand preference among solution providers.
Richardson left AMD in April 2023 to become chief revenue officer Portsmouth, New Hampshire-based solutions provider Blue Mantis, formerly known as Greenpages. His departure coincided with the departure of distribution giant Marty Bauerlein, who worked for Richardson for a year and a half at AMD as head of North American VAR channels and commercial distribution.
Bauerlein, now chief consumer and commercial officer at Harrisburg, Pennsylvania-based D&H Distributing, told CRN on Tuesday that he remains optimistic about AMD.
“AMD has strong programs for distributors and solution providers, specifically targeted towards its EPYC server CPUs and Ryzen client CPUs,” he said. “This has strengthened AMD’s position, especially with the growing popularity of its products across various channels as they have a great diversification strategy.”

A senior executive at Insight Enterprises, a leading US-based solutions provider, told CRN that his company is “very aligned” with AMD on the chip designer’s AI strategy. He said this is reflected in a number of ways, such as a recent meeting between top executives from the two firms that included AMD CEO Lisa Su and Insight CEO Joyce Mullen.
“They’ve really been listening to their partners in terms of feedback on their partner programs, and I wouldn’t have said that until a few years ago,” said Megan Amdahl, senior vice president of client experience and COO of North America at Chandler, Arizona-based Insight, which ranks No. 17 on CRN’s 2024 Solution Provider 500 list.
Kevin O’Buckley will lead Intel Foundry’s customer service and ecosystem operations and Naga Chandrasekaran will run global manufacturing operations, meaning two outsiders will oversee a key aspect of CEO Pat Gelsinger’s return plan.
Intel’s manufacturing division is undergoing a second leadership change this year, with an outsider taking over worldwide operations from a retiring veteran company executive.
The Santa Clara, California-based semiconductor giant announced Thursday that it has hired Micron Technology executive Naga Chandrasekaran (pictured above) to replace Keyvan Esfarjani, a 29-year Intel veteran, as head of the company’s worldwide manufacturing operations. Less than three months after the official launch of Intel Foundry, the company said Stuart Pan Pan was retiring as head of Intel Foundry Services — which covers customer service and ecosystem operations — and handing the reins to a new leader, Kevin O’Buckley, who previously worked at semiconductor company Marvell Technologies. Pan started a new job in June as COO of Grok, a chip designer that has reinvented itself as a cloud service for AI inferencing.
O’Buckley will lead the Intel foundry’s customer service and ecosystem operations and Chandrasekaran will take over manufacturing operations, meaning two outsiders will oversee a key aspect of Gelsinger’s comeback plan, which sees the company build a contract chip-making business that will overtake Samsung to become the world’s second-largest foundry by 2030.
The two leaders will work closely with Intel Foundry CFO Lorenzo Florez, who joined the company in April, and Ann Kelleher, a 28-year veteran of the company who serves as executive vice president and general manager of Foundry Technology Development.
“As we continue to build a globally resilient semiconductor supply chain and create the world’s first systems foundry for the AI era, Naga’s leadership will help us accelerate our progress and capitalize on the significant long-term growth opportunities that lie ahead,” Gelsinger said.
Intel said Esfarjani, who has led Intel’s worldwide manufacturing operations since 2020, has decided to retire but will remain at the company for the remainder of the year “to ensure a seamless transition.” The chipmaker credited his “distinguished career” for establishing “a strong foundation for Intel Foundry,” and said, “His leadership in global supply chain resiliency and manufacturing excellence has helped position Intel’s business for long-term success.”

HP Inc. calls its new OmniBook Ultra laptop the “world’s most high-performance AI PC,” and to achieve this, the company said it entered into an “intensive co-engineering” partnership with AMD to take the computer’s neural processing unit to new heights.
The PC and print giant said Monday that a 14-inch laptop, to be released in August, will use AMD’s new operating system. Ryzen AI 300 series processors And it will boost the processor’s neural processing unit (NPU) to 55 trillion operations per second (TOPS), allowing PCs to process AI workloads faster and run more workloads simultaneously. [Related: HP Is Bullish on New Qualcomm PCs But Says Adoption Will Take Time]
The consumer-focused OmniBook Ultra was one of a few announcements made by HP at its Imagine AI event held in New York last Thursday, where the company showcased several independent software providers, including Safeable and Zoom, that are leveraging the NPU to deliver new AI-enabled experiences available for AI PCs now or later this year.
At the event, Alex Cho, president of personal systems at HP, said the integration of AI technologies within applications, operating systems and hardware systems represents a “huge transformation” that will empower people, making “better decision-making, better analysis and extraordinary creativity available to everyone.”
“In this era, our vision is to ensure that people can unlock the power of AI and transform the way they think about work and life.” [how they are] “Connecting with other people and getting work done. And doing that is not just about being more productive, it’s about being a catalyst for employee growth and more fulfilling work experiences,” he said.
The OmniBook Ultra pushes 55 TOPS through the Ryzen AI 300 chip’s NPU, pushing AI performance beyond the maximum 50 TOPS previously stated by AMD for the NPU within the new processor series, which also includes the CPU and GPU.
According to HP, the OmniBook Ultra’s NPU performance is 45 percent higher than Apple’s recently launched M4 system-on-chip, which is available in the latest iPad Pro, and nearly twice that of the company’s M3 chip, which is available in many Mac computers.
This is even higher than Qualcomm’s recently launched 40 TOPS NPU performance. Snapdragon X Processorthat powers HP New OmniBook X and EliteBook Ultra laptops,
Cho called it a “unique” differentiator for HP and said it is part of a broader effort by the company to optimize various software and hardware components for its PCs.
“We’re curating the stack from silicon, BIOS, [operating systems]Applications, I/O, etc. And with that deep co-engineering [AMD] “That’s helped us deliver a level of performance that’s better than the rest of the industry,” he told CRN last Thursday.
An AMD spokesperson told CRN that HP had approached the chip designer about enhancing the NPU performance of its Ryzen AI 300 series.
“As a result of close co-engineering work, AMD and HP have developed a custom solution enabling 55 TOPS on the Ryzen AI 300 Series for the OmniBook Ultra,” the representative said.

HP said the laptops will support Microsoft’s Copilot+ PC experiences when an update is available from the operating system giant. This is different from HP’s Snapdragon Xe-based EliteBook Ultra and OmniBook X laptops, which supported Copilot+ at launch.
The new OmniBook and EliteBook laptops represent the second wave of AI PCs coming from HP, following the launch of the OmniBook in March. Business Laptops and Mobile Workstations which it called “the industry’s largest” AI PC portfolio.
The new release of the Alluxio Enterprise AI Data Orchestration Platform makes it easier to use GPU-based systems for training and running AI applications, and to provision AI/ML systems with data at HPC levels.
Alluxio has launched a new version of its data management platform for AI tasks that can better utilize high-performance GPU systems, helping businesses and organizations scale their data-intensive AI workloads.
The new 3.2 version of Alluxio Enterprise AI also delivers advanced data I/O capabilities and improved performance with HPC (high-performance computing) storage systems to boost AI processing.
“This release is all about GPUs and, in particular, data loading performance and storage performance for different GPUs,” said Adit Madan, product director at Alluxio, in an interview with CRN. [Related: Meeting The Exploding Demand For Data: The 2024 CRN Big Data 100] AlluxioHeadquartered in San Mateo, California, the company develops its flagship Alluxio enterprise data platform for a range of big data management tasks. In October, the company launched its Alluxio Enterprise AIA new system built on the company’s core data orchestration technology specifically for data-intensive AI and machine learning tasks.
Madan explained that in the provision of AI and machine learning applications, many organizations have separate compute and storage infrastructure dedicated to the development and training of AI/ML applications — including the use of deep learning frameworks such as PyTorch and TensorFlow — and when these applications are running in production.
Madan said that, while an organisation can use high-performance GPU-based systems for training AI/ML systems, the AI/ML applications may not be able to use that computing power once they are in production.
The Alluxio platform provides the flexibility needed to access GPU resources that can be used when needed. “With GPU scarcity, we have seen this resonate with a lot of early adopters for this product,” Madan said. The company says the 3.2 release delivers over 97 percent GPU utilization in large language model training benchmarks.
The new release also delivers improved data I/O performance, achieving up to 10GB/sec throughput and 200K IOPS for AI/ML applications. The new software also delivers data storage performance, which the company says is comparable to HPC storage based on the MLPerf benchmark, without the need for additional HPC storage infrastructure.
Alluxio Enterprise AI also provides a new file system API, an FSSpec implementation, for Python applications that expands Alluxio’s interoperability within the Python development ecosystem. And new advanced cache management functionality gives administrators greater data management control.
“By achieving performance comparable to HPC storage and enabling GPU usage anywhere, we are not only solving today’s challenges, but we are future-proofing AI workloads for the next generation of innovations,” Madan said.
Graphcore co-founder and CEO Nigel Toon said of the acquisition: “In SoftBank, we have a partner that can enable the Graphcore team to redefine the landscape of AI technology.”
Japanese investment giant SoftBank Group has acquired AI chip designer Graphcore, in what it describes as part of its “journey” toward artificial general intelligence, or AGI for short.
Graphcore revealed the deal on Thursday, saying the Bristol, UK-based company would become a wholly-owned subsidiary of SoftBank, retain its name and continue to create “highly-skilled jobs across a range of disciplines.” [Related: AMD To Acquire AI Lab, LLM Developer Silo AI For $665 Million]
Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
The deal was announced two months after the Bloomberg report. Report He said SoftBank is moving ahead in talks to buy Graphcore.
Founded in 2016, Graphcore had struggled in recent years to find traction for its intelligence processing unit (IPU) chip, a novel chip architecture that it previously said was better suited for AI applications than Nvidia’s data center GPUs due to the IPU’s “fine-grained parallelism.”
The company had attracted billions of dollars in funding from major investors such as Sequoia Capital, Microsoft, Dell Technologies, and Samsung over several years, pushing its valuation to $2.8 billion in 2020.
But while the company said a few years ago that it was rolling out a new generation of IPUs that compete with Nvidia’s A100 GPU, the company said its business has been impacted by deteriorating macroeconomic conditions, which have slowed sales of systems equipped with its IPUs. As a result, Graphcore’s 2022 revenue fell 46 percent to $2.7 million and it reduced its headcount that year by 21.7 percent to 494, according to public filings with the U.K. government.
Around the same time, Graphcore began to diversify its business model, which had primarily focused on selling IPU systems, and shifted its focus to selling access to such systems in the cloud through partners such as Gcore in Europe and Paperspace in North America.
The company also ended a partner program it launched in 2020 that included solution providers in North America, though a spokesperson told CRN earlier this year that Graphcore continues to work with channel partners.
As Graphcore struggles, Nvidia Increased its dominance in the AI computing field With its data center GPUs, the company became one of the world’s most valuable companies earlier this year.
Now, following SoftBank’s acquisition of Graphcore, the company has found a renewed sense of purpose, a fresh jolt of energy and a new source of investment, which it has said will fuel new growth.
“This is a tremendous endorsement of our team and their ability to build truly transformational AI technologies at scale, and a great outcome for our company,” Graphcore co-founder and CEO Nigel Toon said in a statement.
Toon described the demand for AI computing solutions as “huge”, saying there is considerable room for growth, adding, “There is still much to be done to improve efficiency, flexibility and computational power to unlock the full potential of AI.”
“In SoftBank, we have a partner that can enable the Graphcore team to redefine the landscape of AI technology,” the semiconductor giant said.
SoftBank acquires Graphcore as it seeks to raise $100 billion for an AI chip venture competing with Nvidia, Bloomberg previously reportedThe firm owned British chip designer Arm until September last year, when it acquired the took the company public While he retained the majority of ARM’s shares. Since then, ARM’s share price has increased by 185 percent.
“Next-generation semiconductors and compute systems are essential in the AGI journey, and we are delighted to collaborate with Graphcore on this mission,” Vikas J. Parekh, Managing Partner at SoftBank Investment Advisers, said in a statement.
As part of its efforts to challenge Nvidia, the chip designer said its $665 million acquisition of European AI lab and open-source large language model developer Silo AI will help enterprises develop and deploy AI solutions faster and more cost-effectively.
AMD has entered into an agreement to acquire Silo AI, which it called Europe’s largest private AI lab and a developer of open-source multilingual large language models.
The Santa Clara, California-based chip designer said Wednesday that the all-cash transaction, valued at about $665 million, “represents another important step in the company’s strategy to provide end-to-end AI solutions based on open standards and in strong partnership with the global AI ecosystem.” The deal is expected to close later this year. Forrest Norrod, AMD’s top data center executive, explained that AMD announced the acquisition as it “dramatically” increases its investment in AI and releases chips at a faster pace in the face of continued generative AI innovation and Nvidia’s aggressive strategy, which has allowed its rival to dominate the AI computing market. said in a recent CRN interview,
Silo AI CEO and co-founder Peter Sarlin will continue to lead the lab’s team and report to Vamsi Boppana, senior vice president of AMD’s Artificial Intelligence Group.
Boppana, who joined AMD in 2022 through the Xilinx acquisition, said the Silo AI acquisition will help enterprises develop and deploy AI solutions faster and more effectively.
“Silo AI’s team of trusted AI experts and proven experience developing leadership AI models and solutions, including cutting-edge LLM built on AMD platforms, will further accelerate our AI strategy and drive the creation and rapid implementation of AI solutions for our global customers,” he said in a statement.
Founded in 2017 and headquartered in Helsinki, Finland, Silo AI employs “world-class” AI scientists and engineers who have “extensive experience developing tailored AI models, platforms, and solutions for leading enterprises in the cloud, embedded, and endpoint computing markets,” according to AMD.
Silo AI’s offerings are part of “end-to-end AI-powered solutions that help customers quickly and easily integrate AI into their products, services, and operations,” and the company’s clients include major companies such as Allianz, Philips, Rolls-Royce, and Unilever.
The lab’s offerings include open-source multilingual large language models (LLMS) that run on AMD platforms as well as its own Silogen model platform.
“We have a well-established history of building successful AI products and delivering value to our customers. We look forward to being part of AMD to further expand our impact and develop enterprise solutions and AI models that address the most complex challenges associated with deploying AI at scale today,” Sarlin said in a statement.
Silo AI is one of three AI-related acquisitions made by AMD last year. Mypsology And node.ai In 2023, the company said it has invested more than $125 million in a dozen AI startups to boost its AI strategy.
