House painted in neon colours for Koodo ad violates rules: City of Montreal
The City of Montreal says the owner of a more than 100-year-old home violated city rules by allowing it to be painted neon to advertise for telecommunications company Koodo.

A Toronto-based advertising firm recently transformed the Victorian-style duplex into a life-size Koodo advertisement by painting it the deep pink colour chosen by the company, which uses a mix of lime green, purple, teal and orange.

A sign that used to be put up in the front that read, “There’s happiness under this roof. Koodo Internet” was missing as of Thursday afternoon.

City spokesman Simon Charron said the publicity stunt was not authorized and violates city rules.

“It is important to note that town planning regulations prohibit painting bricks on the exterior of most buildings,” he said in a written message.

“Modifications made to heritage buildings are also strictly regulated. In addition, the placement of advertising in the urban landscape is also governed by regulation.”

Charron said the city will send inspectors to the home and issue a notice of violation to the owner.

A spokesperson for one of the companies behind the ad told The Canadian Press that the campaign was led by Toronto-based company Camp Jefferson and aims to “create a memorable and joyful experience for the community.”

“Before starting this activation, we sought and followed guidance and instructions from a representative of the city of Montreal,” wrote Isabelle Bonin of Plus, the company that collaborated on the campaign.

“According to our original plan, we will restore the house to its original state on July 8 and will continue to comply with the rules and regulations of the City of Montreal.”

The real estate listing describes the home as a “three-story Victorian-style duplex.” A photo of the home’s facade, presumably taken before its conversion, shows it painted a light green.

The Realtor.ca ad lists the construction date as 1870, although municipal assessment dates it to 1910.

Heritage Montreal also has a problem with the conversion of the house.

“The issue is not the creativity of the choice of colours, but how they are used to circumvent the City of Montreal’s advertising regulations,” the organization wrote in an email.

It says that applying certain paints to masonry can cause damage over time, and removing or repainting them can be costly and complicated.

“So, while creative color choices can enhance the aesthetic, it’s important to balance creativity with code compliance and consider the long-term impact on building materials.”

Charlottetown water and sewer customers can expect a small refund on their next bill if they were overcharged by mistake.

After switching to new billing software in April 2022, customers were charged double for one day in every billing cycle.

Richard McEwan, water and sewer manager for the City of Charlottetown, said it amounts to about $50,000, or an average of about $7 per customer.

McEwan said the last day of one quarter’s bill was the same as the first date of the next quarter’s bill, leading to additional charges.

McEwen said the mistake was caught by a city employee who noticed the error in his own statement.

“It was surprising, because this is a multinational billing system and I was surprised that this error could occur in it. But it was an error and we have now fixed it and we are providing refunds to our customers.”

Mangalore: The bypoll to the Mangalore seat was necessitated due to the death of Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) MLA Sarwat Karim Ansari in October 2023.
