Column: Going back to school with asthma

[Column written by Lindsay Bishop RN]

Going back to school in September is an exciting and busy time for both students and parents; however, it’s important to prepare ahead of time if you’re the parent of a child with asthma.

Around the world, there is a sharp increase in the number of asthma attacks and emergency room visits at the beginning of the school year, known as the September peak, which occurs in the second and third weeks after school opens.

Students are enjoying fresh air in camps, swimming etc. Classrooms have been closed during summer vacations, causing a lot of problems for students suffering from asthma and allergies. Although it is great to be back with classmates, close contact with large groups helps the virus thrive.

Preparations for school opening should begin at least two weeks before the school opens.

Your child may have been healthy over the summer and not been using their preventer inhaler. Now is the time to make sure they are using their preventer inhaler daily or as prescribed. It can be used daily for up to 2 weeks to provide good protection against severe attacks.

Every child should always have a reliever inhaler such as Ventolin and a spacer available for emergencies, either in the school bag or with the teacher for younger students. Make sure these are labelled and that your child and their teacher know how and when to use them. Mask type spacers are for children aged 0 to 4 years only. Mouthpiece spacers are recommended up to the age of 4 and for children of all ages, including adults. These ensure that more of the medicine reaches the lungs.

Some students may use other types of inhalers that do not require a spacer. Some may be prescribed a combination inhaler that contains both a preventer and a reliever. Check with the pharmacist to make sure you have all the necessary equipment and ask them to demonstrate or check the technique.

At your next visit, discuss smart therapy with your child’s doctor. Global guidelines say it is definitely best practice for children over 12 years of age and with moderate certainty for children 6 to 12 years of age. An inhaler [Symbicort] Two pills instead of one to control asthma!

Global initiative for asthma [GINA] The organization wants to remove “mild” asthma from the medical vocabulary. 25% of deaths and hospitalizations occur in patients who have not had asthma for more than 3 months. Calling asthma mild encourages patients and parents to relax and perhaps skip the preventive inhaler, perhaps forget to take the pump to school and perhaps forget to renew their prescription.

Your child should have a written “Asthma Action Plan.” Now is the time to review that plan with your doctor. A copy of the Asthma Action Plan should be given to your child’s school.

The 2024/2025 Bermuda Student Asthma Registry has just been released. Be sure to add your child to this registry so that asthma specialists as well as your child’s teacher will know the nature and severity of your child’s asthma and can prioritize support. https://bit.ly/2024BermudaStudentAsthmaRegistry,

In addition to notifying your child’s school, the student must be added each year.

The seasonal flu vaccine is recommended for all children with asthma. Make sure your child’s vaccinations are up to date and check their COVID, pertussis, and RSV.

Encourage your child to eat a healthy diet, get plenty of fresh air, exercise, and wash hands frequently.

Let’s be prepared for the new school year so that we don’t see large numbers of children going to the emergency room and missing time from school. We want all of our students to have a happy healthy school year and be able to participate in all school activities, including sports. Asthma is treatable and with information, your child doesn’t have to miss school or sports. Many great athletes have asthma and have achieved their potential by being well informed and following best practice guidelines.

BRSC: Keeping our children safe on the streets

During road safety back to school “We can create a safer environment for everyone by being alert, following traffic rules and teaching our children how to navigate the roads safely,” the Bermuda Road Safety Council says. [BRSC] said Chairman Dennis Lister.

Mr Lister said: “As we start the new school year, it’s important to address the road safety issues that come with the back to school season. With more children travelling to school on foot, by bicycle and by car, our roads become busier, and the need to enhance safety measures becomes paramount.

“One of the most pressing issues is the traffic around school drop-off and pick-up times. Drivers should use extra caution in these areas. Speed limits are lowered in school zones for a reason – to protect children who may step into the road unexpectedly. It’s very important to obey these limits and be alert to crossing guards, who are there to ensure safe passage for students. Remember, distractions like texting or checking your phone in these busy areas can have serious consequences.”

“Another important concern is the safety of students who walk or bicycle to school. We must remind our children to use crosswalks, obey traffic signals, and stay on the sidewalk whenever possible. Students who ride bikes should always wear helmets and be familiar with the rules of the road. It is also important for parents to avoid distractions from their children, such as using a phone or headphones while walking on our busy streets.”

“For drivers, being aware of school buses is another important aspect of road safety. When a bus has stopped we urge you not to overtake a bus while children are boarding and alighting it. Overtaking a school bus can be extremely dangerous as children’s actions can be unpredictable and they may not always be aware of oncoming traffic. By overtaking a stopped school bus, you run the risk of hitting a child who suddenly comes into your path. The few seconds you may save by passing the bus are never worth the potential consequences.”

“Finally, we must emphasize the importance of patience and courtesy during these busy times. Whether you are a parent waiting in the drop-off line, a driver passing through a school zone, or a pedestrian walking near a school, taking a few extra moments to prioritize safety over speed can prevent accidents and ensure that all students get to and from school safely.”

“Finally, road safety during the back-to-school season is a shared responsibility. By staying vigilant, following traffic rules, and teaching our children how to navigate the roads safely, we can create a safer environment for everyone. Let us all play our part in ensuring that every child gets to school and returns home safely.”

Group to issue guidelines for return to school

A collaborative group is preparing to release a document called Back to School Pointers to support parents during the 2024/25 school year.

A spokesperson said, “For this kick-off to the 2024/25 school year, a variety of stakeholders have come together, reminded of the wisdom that it takes a village. This collaborative campaign aims to help Bermuda realise that each of us is always learning.

“Everyone has the capacity for personal growth over time. So MLK of 1967 had a much broader perspective than Martin of 1957. Malcolm changed in his 39 years. A close friend of mine was expelled in her sophomore year of high school, but eventually successfully completed a master’s degree.

“None of us is perfect, but the course of life gives us opportunities to learn from our past.

“Parents are their children’s first teachers and so their role is crucial. While we remind parents of the incredible power they have when they engage mindfully with their children, we also remind them that they are not alone; they have a village of support.”

“Groups in the Village involved in this collaborative work include, but are not limited to, the Aquarium, Bermuda College, the Bermuda National Trust, the Department of Education, Imagine Bermuda, the Library, the National Museum of Bermuda and others.

“These village stakeholders intend to maintain this collaboration to support parents, reminding each other that we are all always learning. Over the next few days we intend to make Back to School pointers available across the island – a readable one-page guide for parents.

“In addition, on September 17, a prototype project will begin, run by educator and heroic mom Nekesha Holdip, in collaboration with the library. It involves offering family learning kits on loan, including books and puzzles, which will be made available to library card holders at the Adult Library, Cesar’s Pharmacy, Somerset and Somer’s Grocery – St. George. Note that library cards are free.

“Over the coming weeks and months, this initiative will continue to foster collaboration and community, and look at how – together – we can optimise the potential of all our families, and therefore our children.

“This campaign is considering the whole child. In 2024 we know that the digital age is a double-edged sword; there is no doubt that it offers solid benefits; however it also has some negative impacts. To promote conversation about those impacts, the press release includes Link to the blog Bermuda’s own Katie Davis PhD – Associate Professor at the University of Washington. Please consider her informed perspective.

Teachers attend dual language learning training in UK

This summer, teachers from Purvis Primary, together with Acting Principal Enid Furbert-Jacobs and ERU School Transformation Lead for Parish Primary Schools Mrs Luann Wainwright-Dill, travelled to the UK for professional development at The Bilingual Primary School in Brighton and Hove.

“Organised by the Education Reform Unit, a government spokesperson said [ERU] To support education reform, the visit provided professional learning for Purvis Primary, one of the schools undergoing transformation. The bilingual primary school, which serves primarily native English speakers, provided valuable insights and experiences for staff. Purvis Primary, the first parish primary school in Bermuda to introduce a dual language programme for Year 1 students, aimed to learn from a similar model.

Reflecting on the experience, Enid Furbert-Jacobs, Acting Principal of Purvis Primary, said, “The most impressive experience was seeing how language and culture were seamlessly integrated into the curriculum. Seeing this first-hand strengthened my belief that our approach to second language learning through content instruction is highly effective.”

Luann Wainwright-Dill said, “This intensive experience was incredibly valuable, giving our team new enthusiasm, practical knowledge for daily instruction, and a clearer vision for teaching languages and supporting learners with a variety of needs and abilities.”
