Attorney General and Justice Secretary Kim Wilkerson recently attended a graduation ceremony at the Westgate Correctional Facility to honor Shay-Unni Smith and Tyshawn Brown, who successfully earned their high school equivalency certificates.
A government spokesperson said, “This achievement marks a milestone in his journey towards personal transformation and reintegration into society.”
Minister Wilkerson praised the graduates for their dedication and resilience. He said, “Your achievements today are a testament to your intelligence and courage, commitment and strength.”
“This accomplishment is no small feat – it is a powerful step toward a brighter, more fulfilling future for everyone in your life.”
He highlighted the importance of education in rehabilitation efforts. “With determination and hard work, you have shown that education is for you and is an important part of your journey of self-discovery and self-development.
“You are proving to yourself and the world that you are capable, resilient and determined,” the minister said.
“Shay-Unni Smith began her studies with the Department of Corrections last July through the Penn Foster program, transferring credits from her time at the Berkeley Institute,” a spokesperson said. He completed 49 lessons, devoting 12–14 hours to study each week. Despite the challenges she faced, She-Unni persevered to the end.
“Tyshawn Brown participated in the GED program to tackle the math, science, language arts and social studies tests. After studying an average of 12-14 hours each week, Tyshawn passed every exam on his first attempt. He was a persistent student and emerged as a leader among his peers by encouraging others and recruiting new students.
Minister Wilkerson reaffirmed the Government’s dedication to rehabilitation and reintegration. “The Department of Corrections believes in the mission of protecting the public and providing rehabilitative services to those in its care. And we see that mission lived out today through each of you, who have taken that mission to heart,” she said.
He emphasized that facilitating such programs is an integral part of this mission. “You have taken a decisive step in shaping a future full of hope and possibilities. Continue to believe in your potential and use the tools you have acquired here to build a positive, productive life,” the Minister encouraged.
