Developed in line with the National Curriculum Framework (NCF) 2023 and the new National Education Policy 2020, NCERT has revised most of the chapters and grounded them in the Indian context.

The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has released a new English language textbook titled ‘Poorvi’ for Class 6. While the old book had stories mostly by non-Indian authors, the new textbook includes nine prose works by Indian authors and set in an Indian setting, while five poems are by non-Indian authors, reports the Indian Express.

Developed in line with the National Curriculum Framework (NCF) 2023 and the new National Education Policy 2020, the NCERT has revised most of the chapters and placed them in the Indian context. The old NCERT English language textbook titled “Honeysuckle” had eight poems, seven of which were by non-Indian authors, and eight prose works, five of which were by non-Indian authors. It also included Munshi Premchand’s story ‘Fair Play’ and Ruskin Bond’s story ‘Banyan Tree’, the news agency reported.

Besides, the word ‘Bharat’ has been used for the first time in the NCERT textbook. The report said that in the chapter titled “Culture and Tradition”, the word has been used 19 times, while India has been mentioned seven times. The chapter also has a section titled ‘Our India, Incredible India!’, which begins with a seven-sentence passage referring to India only as ‘Bharat’. “India is known across the world as a land of wise and heroic individuals… All these elements ensure that India prospers and is respected globally,” the chapter reads.

Besides this, the textbook also includes a chapter on the use of spices apart from cooking and a chapter on yoga and its benefits, the report said.

NCERT had earlier announced that it would release new textbooks for classes 3 and 6 in April and May, however, it has been delayed. Class 3 textbooks are already available in the market. The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) had earlier directed all affiliated schools to follow the new curriculum and textbooks for classes 3 and 6 from the 2024-25 academic session. “Consequently, schools are advised to follow these new curriculum and textbooks for classes 3 and 6 in place of textbooks published by NCERT by the year 2023,” CBSE Director (Academics) Joseph Emmanuel told PTI.
