‘Solidarity is not a transactional thing’: The politics and activism of PEI’s Pride festival

Pride PEI has said it will not accept funding or participation requests from big corporate banks for its upcoming celebration, a measure to promote solidarity with Palestinians in the wake of the ongoing war there. The organization will also continue to bar the island’s political parties from entering the annual Pride parade. CBC’s Kerry Campbell spoke with the organization’s president, Aaron Sardinha, about the reasons behind these decisions.

Large crowds attend parade at start of first day of Calgary Stampede

Calgarians got some relief from the water crisis Friday when they lined up in groups of six to watch the annual Summer Stampede festival parade downtown.

“I’m in the saddle,” said Rita Freese, with her grandson by her side.

Freese said she hasn’t been to the sidewalk to watch the parade since 1989. She saw it on TV last year, but said it wasn’t the same.

“I said, ‘I’ll never go there again, rain or shine.'”

Others arrived several hours before sunrise to ensure a good spot to view the 100 entries, including 21 floats, 11 marching bands and 700 horses.

“My mom scored a goal for the team,” Daniel Oliverio said.

“She came by this morning around 6:30 to pick up Spot, then me and my mother-in-law got there a couple of hours later so Spot could get started.”

Oliverio said she has been going to the parade with her children for the past two years, continuing a tradition that started when their parents took them at a young age.

He said the main attraction for the youngsters was Calgary Flames mascot Harvey the Hound and “the horses and the vehicles that clean up after them.”

Alberta Premier Danneel Smith wore a bright blue cowboy hat and denim jacket and waved to the crowd from a buggy. Federal Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre rode a horse and urged the crowd to “abolish the tax,” a reference to his party’s campaign against the consumer carbon levy.

Calgary Mayor Jyoti Gondek also joined the parade on a horse wearing a white hat.

The parade was held on the day a major water main ruptured in the northwest of the city, flooding streets and cutting off 60 per cent of the drinking water supply to the city and surrounding communities.

Workers worked hard to repair the line and in the process found five more weak spots that needed repair.

A directive for Calgarians to cut indoor water use by 25 per cent and use fewer showers and toilet flushes was lifted earlier this week.

Restrictions on external water supplies continued, and the system was operated at reduced capacity to keep sufficient water in reserve to extinguish the fire and to test a replacement line.

Oliverio said his family took the restrictions in stride.

“We bathed the children less and didn’t even water the grass, but it didn’t affect us much,” he said.

The Stampede — a combination midway fair, entertainment festival and rodeo competition — brings thousands of tourists to town every July.

Earlier this month, concerns were raised that the city’s water system would be overwhelmed due to the surge in population caused by the 10-day event.

Gondek has urged Calgarians to limit their indoor water use, and contingency plans are in place to deal with a stampede.

For example, the Stampede will clean the rodeo grandstands less frequently using non-treated water.

The Stampede is also the site of political pancake flipping. Smith is scheduled to toss a flapjack on Monday, while the opposition NDP, with new leader Naheed Nenshi, is set to host three pancake events starting on Sunday.

Jammu and Kashmir election dates after August 19: BJP may promise to snatch PoK in manifesto, will contest all 90 seats alone

After delimitation, the total number of seats in Jammu and Kashmir has increased to 114, of which 24 are in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. (Getty)

Sources told News18 that the BJP is “open” to post-poll alliances with “like-minded parties” and will not go into the elections with any chief ministerial face

The announcement of Jammu and Kashmir assembly elections – the first since the abrogation of Articles 370 and 35A – is likely to be made “immediately after” August 19, when the month-long Amarnath Yatra ends. The BJP has begun preparations to the extent of discussing its manifesto, which may include a promise to wrest back Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK).

According to sources, a crucial BJP meeting was held in Delhi on Thursday attended by party president JP Nadda, Union Home Minister Amit Shah and state BJP representatives, where Shah asked the state leadership to “be ready” for the elections.

Sources also claimed that there will be no pre-poll alliance and the BJP will contest all 90 seats. After delimitation, the total number of seats in Jammu and Kashmir increased to 114, of which 24 seats fall in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.

However, sources told News18 that the BJP is “open” to an alliance with “like-minded parties” after the elections.

According to sources, BJP will not contest the elections with any chief ministerial candidate. Like the Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh or Rajasthan assembly elections, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be the face of the campaign.

The BJP top brass has asked its state leadership to begin deliberations on the manifesto, which is likely to prominently feature the issue of taking back PoK. The BJP may also use the legacy of Maharaja Hari Singh – the Hindu king of the erstwhile princely state who decided to join India – in its manifesto.

Meanwhile, at another meeting held in Jammu, also attended by BJP’s J&K election in-charge G Kishan Reddy and in-charge Tarun Chugh, Chugh asked the unit to “take advantage” of the electoral defeat of PDP’s Mehbooba Mufti in Anantnag-Rajouri and National Conference’s Omar Abdullah in Baramulla seats in the recently concluded Lok Sabha elections.

According to sources, BJP will strongly raise the issues of Jammu and Kashmir Bank scam and Roshni scam during the campaign.

Amidst many activities, JP Nadda will be in Jammu on Saturday where he will address the working committee of Jammu and Kashmir BJP.

Earlier, in an interview with news agency PTI in May, Shah had promised to hold elections in Jammu and Kashmir before September 30 after which its statehood would be restored – a long-standing demand since 2019 when J&K was bifurcated into two parts and made a union territory.

Shah had said in May, “After the completion of the Lok Sabha elections in Jammu and Kashmir, the next step is the assembly elections, which we will conduct before the Supreme Court’s deadline.” On December 11 last year, the Supreme Court had directed the Election Commission of India (ECI) to conduct elections in Jammu and Kashmir by September 30, 2024.
